Golf simulator room size and ceiling height
The room decides your launch monitor, your screen and sometimes whether you can swing a driver at all. I pulled the space rules from Trackman, Uneekor, SkyTrak, Rapsodo, Garmin, Full Swing and the three biggest simulator retailers, and lined them up.

Ceiling height: the number that kills most rooms
Your ceiling has to clear the top of your driver swing, and the finished height is lower than the drywall measurement. Rain or Shine warns that "a 10 ft slab-to-joist measurement can finish closer to 9 ft" once a projector, an overhead launch monitor and flooring go in. Hitting mats alone add 1–2 in (Shop Indoor Golf).
The most specific guidance I found is Shop Indoor Golf's golfer-height table:
| Golfer | Minimum ceiling | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5'10", flatter swing | 9 ft | 10+ ft |
| Under 5'10", upright swing | 9.5 ft | 10+ ft |
| 5'10" to 6'2" | 10 ft | 11+ ft |
| Over 6'2" | 10.5 ft | 11+ ft |
Other makers are broadly in line:
- Rapsodo: golfers about 5'8" and under may manage with 9 ft; taller golfers "may need 10 or even 11 feet". Leave 6–9 in above your highest swing point.
- SkyTrak: 10 ft "typically offers ample clearance", though many golfers say 9 ft is enough.
- Trackman: 10 ft+ for the iO and Trackman 4.
- Uneekor overhead units: must be mounted 9–10 ft above the hitting surface, so the ceiling sets a hard limit.

Owner reports show why the table is a guide, not a law. On Golf Simulator Forum, a 6'2" golfer swings driver in a 9 ft space with no issues, while one builder estimates that about 1 in 5 golfers over 6 ft will hit a 9 ft ceiling with driver, usually on the follow-through 2–4 ft behind the head. Swing plane matters as much as height.
Do the test swing
Before you buy anything, make slow full swings with your driver (or something slightly longer) in the room, standing on something as thick as your planned mat. Carl's Place and forum owners both recommend it.Width: offset or centered tee
Width depends on whether one person hits from one side, or left- and right-handed golfers share the bay:
- Offset tee (one-handed room): about 10 ft minimum, 12 ft comfortable. The tee sits off-center so the swing has room on one side. Carl's Place, Rain or Shine and Shop Indoor Golf all use 10 ft.
- Centered tee (lefties and righties): about 14 ft. Trackman says 15 ft. Uneekor says 13 ft, or 15 ft if the golfer is 6 ft or taller. SkyTrak suggests adding 1–2 ft to its 12 ft figure.
Side-of-ball launch monitors (SkyTrak, Foresight GC3, Garmin R50, Uneekor EYE MINI) must move to the other side of the ball for a lefty, so leave room for the unit on whichever side you use. Overhead units like the Uneekor EYE XO2 and Trackman iO avoid that.

Depth: the three-part formula
Three big retailers (Carl's Place, Rain or Shine and Shop Indoor Golf) use the same model for room depth:
Screen to back wall
~1 ft
12–16 in
Screen to ball
10–12 ft
under 10 ft = bounce-back
Behind the ball
4–7 ft
room to swing
Total
15–20 ft
15 min · 18–20 comfortable
Radar launch monitors change the "behind the ball" part, because the unit itself sits on the target line behind you. Their makers publish how far back:
| Radar unit | Unit behind ball | Ball to screen (min) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin R10 | 6–8 ft | 8 ft | Garmin R10 owner's manual |
| Rapsodo MLM2PRO | 6.5–8.5 ft | 8 ft | Rapsodo FAQ |
| Full Swing KIT | 10 ft | 8 ft | Full Swing setup blog |
| FlightScope Mevo Gen2 | 7–9 ft | 8 ft | FlightScope / retailer guidance |
| Other radar units | 7–9 ft | 8 ft | Shop Indoor Golf space guide |
| Trackman 4 | Not published | 16–18 ft unit to screen | Trackman (two pages disagree) |
Radar makers say 8 ft of ball flight is enough for tracking, but screen sellers and Uneekor say 10 ft is the safe minimum because of bounce-back. I use 10 ft as the default in my calculator and treat 8 ft as a hard floor.
Room size by launch monitor type
Shop Indoor Golf's table by type: radar behind the ball about 10 ft H × 12–15 ft W × 16–19 ft D; camera beside the ball 10 × 12–13 × 15–16 ft; ceiling camera 10 × 13–15 × 15–16 ft. Uneekor's EYE XO2 page says 16 × 13 × 10 ft.
Sits behind the ballRadar behind you
Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO, Mevo Gen2, Full Swing KIT, Trackman 4. Cheapest way in and best outdoors, but they need the most depth: about 14–18 ft from the unit to the screen. They don't move for lefties.

SkyTrak ST MAX, Foresight GC3, Garmin R50, Square Golf, Uneekor EYE MINI. Best for short rooms and indoor short game. The unit moves to the other side for a left-handed golfer.

Trackman iO, Uneekor EYE XO2 and XR, Foresight Falcon. A clear floor and easy for both hands, but they need a 9.5–10 ft ceiling and a permanent install.

Where the sources disagree
- Minimum ceiling: anywhere from 8 ft (Shop Indoor Golf's text) to 10 ft as "the practical floor" (one Trackman page; another Trackman page says 9–10 ft).
- Width: Foresight's 2021 buyer's guide says "a minimum width of 20 feet". Every other source says 10–15 ft, so I treat it as an outlier.
- Trackman 4 depth: 16 ft unit-to-net on the tech specs page versus 18 ft+ on Trackman's blog.
- Ball to screen: 8 ft (radar makers) versus 10–12 ft (screen sellers and Uneekor).
- Rain or Shine changed its advice: its 2024 FAQ says stand 8–10 ft from the screen; its 2026 guide says 10–12 ft.
- SkyTrak: PlayBetter's 10 × 10 × 9 ft figure is far smaller than SkyTrak's own studio minimums of 15–17 ft deep.
How to measure your room properly
- Ceiling: measure to the lowest thing above your swing, whether that's a joist, beam, duct, light or garage door track (Rain or Shine and Shop Indoor Golf both flag these). Subtract your mat thickness.
- Width: measure where the screen will hang and where you'll stand. Leave 2–3 in per side for an enclosure (Carl's Place) or 6 in (Shop Indoor Golf).
- Depth: back wall to the wall behind the screen. Remember 12–16 in behind the screen for it to flex.
- Swing test: slow driver swings at your planned tee spot, on something as thick as your mat.
Questions people ask
Is a 9 ft ceiling high enough for a golf simulator?
For many golfers, yes. Retailers call 9 ft workable and 10 ft+ comfortable. Shop Indoor Golf's table puts the minimum at 9 ft for golfers under 5'10" with a flatter swing and 10 ft for golfers 5'10" to 6'2". Owners over 6 ft report mixed results at 9 ft.
Can I have a golf simulator with an 8 ft ceiling?
Rain or Shine says 8 ft limits you to an iron room. Owners with 8 ft garages report bending clubs and tentative swings. A camera unit beside the ball and a recessed mat help, but plan on not swinging driver.
What's the smallest room for a golf simulator?
About 10 ft wide (offset tee), 9 ft high and 15 ft deep is the smallest workable room in retailer guidance, with a camera launch monitor beside the ball.
How far should I stand from a golf simulator screen?
10–12 ft is the common recommendation from Carl's Place, Rain or Shine and Uneekor. Radar makers allow 8 ft for tracking, but bounce-back increases closer than 10 ft.
