Driver launch angle and spin rate: what's optimal?

The two driver numbers people obsess over on a launch monitor. The right answer depends on your swing speed, so here are the windows by speed.

The short answer

For most golfers, a driver launch of roughly 12–15° with 2,200–2,900 rpm of spin is in the right neighbourhood. Faster swings want lower spin; slower swings need more launch and spin to carry. Trackman's optimiser default for an average male golfer (94 mph, level attack angle) is 13.6° of launch and 2,772 rpm.

Foresight's optimised driver windows

Foresight pairs each club speed with a ball speed and an optimal spin window; launch is 10–14° throughout.

What golfers actually produce

Trackman's data shows amateurs launch higher with more spin than tour players: the average 14.5-handicap man launches at 12.6° with 3,275 rpm, while PGA Tour players average 10.4° and 2,545 rpm. LPGA players hit up on the ball (+2.8° attack angle) and launch 12.6° with 2,506 rpm. Trackman calls a positive attack angle "a must" to maximise driver distance.

Trust spin less than speed

In the independent studies I read, spin was the least consistent number between devices and between sessions. Make big changes based on ball speed and launch first. More in how accurate golf simulators are.

Questions people ask

What is a good driver spin rate?

It depends on speed. Foresight's optimised table runs from 2,200–3,200 rpm at 90 mph of club speed to 1,900–2,900 rpm at 110 mph. Slower swings need more spin to keep the ball in the air.

What is the best launch angle for driver?

Foresight's optimised table uses 10–14° for every speed. Fitting ranges published by True Spec are 13–16° for an average 84–96 mph swing and 10–16° above 105 mph.

Why does my driver spin so much indoors?

Radar launch monitors often calculate or struggle with spin in short indoor rooms; studies found spin is the least reliable number. Check your unit's indoor setup and ball recommendations before changing your swing.
