  • Ceiling: Below the 10 ft minimum for your height band. Expect an irons-and-woods room, or a shortened driver swing.
  • Width: With the tee offset to one side, about 10 ft works for a one-handed room; 12 ft is comfortable.
  • Depth: Screen gap (~1 ft) + ball to screen (10 ft) + 7 ft behind the ball. Units beside or above the ball don't need extra room behind you.

What I'd do

  • Short on depth? A camera unit beside the ball (SkyTrak ST MAX, Square Golf, Foresight GC3) doesn't need space behind you.
  • Low ceiling? Avoid overhead units, consider recessing the hitting mat, and test your swing before you buy anything.

How the calculator works

Ceiling minimums follow Shop Indoor Golf's golfer-height table (9 ft under 5'10", 10 ft up to 6'2", 10.5 ft above), minus about 1.5 in for a hitting mat. Width uses the retailer consensus of 10 ft for an offset tee and 14 ft centered for both hands. Depth uses the three-part model Carl's Place, Rain or Shine and Shop Indoor Golf all publish: about 1 ft behind the screen, 10 ft from screen to ball and 4–7 ft behind the ball. Radar units use the makers' own unit distances. Combining them is my synthesis, so treat a "tight" result as "test before you buy". The full reasoning is in my room size guide.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

Most makers and retailers say 9 ft is workable and 10 ft or more is comfortable. Golfers over 5'10" usually need about 10 ft for a full driver swing. Below 8 ft, retailers say you're limited to an iron room.

How deep does a golf simulator room need to be?

About 15 ft at minimum and 18–20 ft to be comfortable, using the retailer model of 1 ft behind the screen, 10 ft from the screen to the ball and 4–7 ft behind the ball. Radar units that sit behind you push that toward 16–18 ft.

How wide should a golf simulator room be?

About 10 ft if the tee is offset to one side for one-handed golfers, and about 14 ft if the tee is centered so lefties and righties can share it.

Can I fit a golf simulator in a 9 ft garage?

Often yes, if you're under about 5'10" or have a flatter swing. Measure to the garage door track and openers, not just the drywall, and do slow test swings with your driver before buying.
