Square Golf Launch Monitor review

Under $700 for a camera unit with no subscription is rare, and that's why I like it for small, indoor-only rooms. The marked balls and lack of club speed are the compromises.

I'd buy it if

Small indoor rooms on a tight budget.

I'd skip it if

You want to practice outdoors or need club speed and smash factor.

My take on the Square Golf

Square Golf sits beside the ball like the expensive camera units, so it works in tight spaces (owners report consistent direction even with foam practice balls). There's no yearly plan: native rounds use pay-as-you-go credits, and GSPro and E6 connect without a gateway fee.

The compromises are real. Spin needs Square's marked balls, it's indoor-only, and it doesn't measure club speed or smash factor. One forum test saw about 1 in 12 shots fail to register, and one owner had to fix their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth before it would re-arm reliably in GSPro.

For a spare room on a tight budget, it's the most honestly priced option I found. If you practice outdoors or care about club speed, look at the Omni.

What I'd check before buying

  • Square's marked balls for spin
  • No club speed
  • Indoor only

How I put this review together: I haven't had this unit in my own bay. It's built from Square Golf's own pages, retailer listings, published reviews and owner reports, each linked below. My research method.

The real cost of the Square Golf Launch Monitor

I saw it at $699.00. No subscription; native rounds use pay-as-you-go credits. GSPro and E6 connect free, but GSPro itself is $250/yr.

Plan or add-onPer yearRequired? What it unlocks
No subscription (credits model)$0OptionalDriving range/practice free. Native course play uses credits: 1 credit per player per hole; 1,000 welcome credits included (~55 solo 18-hole rounds). Credits don't expire.
Credit reloads—OptionalPacks of 100-1,000 credits, as low as ~$0.02/credit (PlayBetter); ~$20 per 1,000 (Breaking Eighty, Omni review)

Three years

My math: price + the yearly plan a typical owner needs to play full courses ($250.00/yr). Excludes net, mat, screen and projector. Compare every plan.

The room it needs

The Square Golf Launch Monitor is a camera-based unit (side of ball (floor unit beside the tee)). Units beside the ball read the launch with cameras, so they need little depth, but they must move to the other side for a left-handed golfer.

Unit behind the ballNot published
Ball to screen (minimum)Not published
Room depth (minimum)10 ft
Room width (minimum)10 ft
Ceiling (minimum)9 ft

Special balls or stickersSquare marked balls REQUIRED for spin; shaft stickers for club data.

Square FAQ: indoor only, not recommended outdoors (PlayBetter: sunlight can damage sensors). Shop Indoor Golf: unit 16.53 in beside tee, 'minimal space, enough room to swing'. PlayBetter space guide (Oct 2025) suggests ~10 W x 10 D x 9 H ft (figure from search-result excerpt; full page not readable). Included 27-in Swing Stick allows practice in very small rooms.

What it measures (and what it estimates)

Makers rarely label which numbers are measured and which are calculated. Where the sources split them, I show it. A calculated value isn't useless, but it's more likely to drift indoors.

Measured

  • ball speed
  • launch angle
  • launch direction
  • back spin (marked ball)
  • side spin (marked ball)
  • club path (shaft sticker)
  • angle of attack
  • face to target
  • dynamic loft

Calculated / estimated

  • apex
  • carry
  • run out
  • total distance

Does NOT report clubhead speed or smash factor (PlayBetter). Spin requires Square's marked balls (3 included). Club data uses reflective shaft stickers. PlayBetter found dynamic loft unreliable.

Software and compatibility

Native app: Square Golf app (range, closest-to-pin, putting practice, 3D courses via credits). Runs on iOS, Android, Windows PC (Bluetooth).
